The projects currently being worked on at the LDC are as diverse as the research groups contributing them to the portfolio. The indications include cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory disorders and infections, as well as other conditions with high, unmet clinical needs. All selected projects comply with the demand for innovation and are characterized by superior quality and a high medical need.
The LDC principles embrace close collaboration with the scientific experts of each project and their institutes, in order to integrate existing knowledge into the drug discovery phase – for instance, pathobiological and clinical know-how – to discover and develop new drugs effectively. This enables the LDC to maintain a broad portfolio and avoiding a single-indication focus. Systematic portfolio diversification balances the inherent risks and benefits associated with drug discovery. This strategy has helped the LDC achieve success and continual growth already in its first three years, and will continue to guarantee stability and sustainability in the years to come.
Quality & Innovation
When selecting projects, the LDC mainly looks at the quality of the research and the commitment of the cooperating group of scientists. However, medical and commercial potential and the degree of innovation that the project entails are equally crucial.
The LDC focuses on chemical and primarily small molecule drug discovery, as well as their profiling and optimization to lead structures.
Overall, the LDC aims to establish a diversified pipeline of innovative projects at different development stages to minimize risk. Projects may address new targets or pathological processes, show new modes of action or be based on new chemical scaffolds.
